WELCOME

CREATOR+TEACHING ARTIST+DIRECTOR

My name is Katie Butler and I am an artist. My work investigates the nature of connection and community in a deeply divided world. As a creator I explore the ways we subvert the fault lines of politics and ideologies to reach out to one another. I often end up with more questions than answers.

And sometimes I bring silliness into the world and call it Art.

TEACHER+ARTIST

I am a Philadelphia-based theatre artist and educator, with a BFA in Theatre Performance from the University of Texas at Arlington, a professional certification from the Portland Actors Conservatory and an MFA from The Pig Iron School with a degree in Devised and Physical Performance.

Since 2015 I have been an arts educator, working with students aged 7-18 and adults in classroom, higher ed and after school settings. My work as an artist revolves around fostering human connection and the collision of storytelling and civic practice, blending mediums and styles to serve communities. I aim to work with underserved populations with the guiding principles of collaboration and physical storytelling to mobilize community-wide arts practices that foster diversity and growth.

shakespeare on tap presents

You know ’em, you love ’em, you’ve probably seen some bad versions of ’em. Catch Romeo & Juliet like you’ve never seen it before as these beautiful, foolish, desperately in love kids race towards doom in the madcap Shakespeare On Tap style. The actors talk to you, you can talk back, and drinking is encouraged (but no pressure, you do you, all are welcome).

You’re probably used to thinking of Shakespeare as a boring, old, dead guy who wrote boring, old, dead plays. But Shakespeare’s theatre was a f*cking madhouse: the audience was an unruly bunch who came for the bear-baiting and stayed to check out the tragedy. They got drunk, bought snacks, and yelled back at the actors all the way to the bloody end. Actors rehearsed only the fights and dances. They got their lines and their cues, they talked directly to the audience, and they tried to tell the truth. When they failed, they probably really bit it.

That sounds way more fun to us than sitting in a dark room staring at a stage 50 feet away, so we want to try it. And maybe we’ll f*ck it all up.

Shakespeare On Tap: Serious actors. No director. One rehearsal. At a bar.
